Dear Northwest Local School District Families and Community Members,

As we strive to provide the highest quality education for our students, we must also remain committed to the long-term financial health and stability of our school district. With this responsibility in mind, I am writing to share an important decision regarding our open enrollment policy moving forward.

After a thorough analysis of our district’s budget, facility capacities, and operational costs, we have made the decision to implement stricter limits on our open enrollment student numbers, effective for the upcoming school year.

Why This Decision Was Made
While we have proudly welcomed families from neighboring communities over the years, the financial landscape for public education requires us to be more strategic than ever before.

  • Maximizing Local Resources: Educating students requires a careful balance of staffing, materials, and classroom space. By tightening open enrollment guidelines, we ensure that your local tax dollars are directly  invested in the students who reside within our boundaries.
  • Cost Management: Managing our class sizes internally allows us to reduce operational strain and avoid unnecessary expenditures on additional personnel or resources that would otherwise be required to accommodate expanding out-of-district numbers.
  • Preserving Program Quality: This proactive measure ensures that we can comfortably maintain our excellent academic offerings, extracurricular activities, and student support services without overextending our budget.
What This Means for Current Families

  • Resident Families: There will be no impact on families living within the district boundaries. Your children’s schedules, building assignments, and resources remain entirely unchanged.
  • Currently Enrolled Open Enrollment Students: We value the students who are already part of our school family. Most of the students currently attending our schools through open enrollment will not be displaced and are permitted to remain with us, provided they continue to meet standard annual reapplication guidelines. Some special education students, due to rising costs in this area, may be asked to return to their home district.
  • New Open Enrollment Applicants: Moving forward, new open enrollment applications will be reviewed under a much stricter, highly limited capacity threshold based entirely on specific grade-level availability.
Our primary mission will always be to educate every student to achieve their full potential. Making difficult financial course-corrections like this ensures we can protect that mission for years to come.

Thank you for your continued partnership, understanding, and dedication to the Northwest Local School District. We will be mailing more information to open enrolled families very soon. If you have any specific questions regarding these upcoming policy adjustments, please feel free to reach out to our central office or call my cell phone anytime at 330-573-9024.

Respectfully,
Shawn Braman, Superintendent
