Parent Handbook

Welcome to my  2nd grade class!  I hope you find this handbook helpful as your child transitions to second grade.  I’ve tried to cover most of the important topics in second grade.  If you have a question always feel free to contact me:

  • email me at:  wade.j@northwest.sparcc.org

  • message me on REMIND (You will find directions in this handbook on how to connect with me.)

  • send me a note

A little more information about me:

This is my 16th year teaching.  I have taught a variety of grade levels including:  Fifth, Title I reading, Kindergarten and second grade.  I am excited to meet your child and see their growth over the course of the year!

Attendance:

Being at school is very important, but if you need to miss school please remember to:

  1. call your child off (330.854.5709)

  2. provide a note or doctor’s excuse when they return.

*Please note:  Although messaging me in REMIND to let me know that your child will be absent is nice.  A physical note or doctor’s excuse is still needed for the office.

Behavior:

  • I use a classroom clip chart to track behavior throughout the day.  The behavior chart is color coded with 7 different colors.  Each day your child will start out the day in the middle of the clip chart on GREEN which means “Ready to Learn.”  Throughout the day your child has the opportunity to move his or her clip up the chart for positive behavior or down the clip chart for negative behavior choices.

  • At the beginning of each month, I will place a behavior calendar for the month inside your child’s take home folder.  (This calendar will stay in your child’s folder all month.)  The calendar has a square for each day we are in school.  At the end of the day, your child will color in the box on his or her behavior calendar to correspond with the color that he or she ended up on our clip chart.  Please initial beside the color each evening.

    • Sometimes students have the opportunity to move up the the clip chart by following our classroom rules well, making good choices, being a good friend, etc.  A student who has done this will come home with their day colored:  blue “good job,” purple “great job” or pink “outstanding leader”

    • If your child moved his or her clip to YELLOW, “Warning,” this means that your child had to have a verbal warning for something, but he or she stopped the behavior after the warning.  They had an “okay” rest of the day.

    • If your child moved his or her clip to ORANGE, “Consequence,” or RED, “Parent Contact,” this means that your child was warned about his or her behavior more than once, yet continued to make poor behavior choices that disrupted learning in the classroom.  If this happens you might also see a number in the square which corresponds to the behavior code at the bottom of the calendar.  This number will give you more information about what behaviors your child struggled with that day.

*Students will have the opportunity to earn some “Wade Bucks” throughout the day.  These might be given out if a child is doing a great job following directions or being a role model.  At the end of each month “Wade Bucks” can be cashed in for a prize.  *Our first prize day will not be till the end of September because we are in school so few days in August.

Take home folder:

The SHARK folder will be used as your child’s “Go Home” folder. All papers will be sent home in this folder. Please check it each night, empty any loose papers, and send it back the next day.   Your child’s daily behavior calendar will also be kept in this folder.

As the year progresses I will be attaching a sight word and Math fact recording sheet.  These sheets will help us stay on the same page on your child’s progress.  They will also help you know which words and facts they should study at home.

Birthdays:

Feel free to send in a treat for your child’s birthday.  Due to COVID all treats should be prepackaged and individually wrapped.  Summer birthdays can choose  a day at your convenience.

Class Parties:

We will have 3 class parties this year:

  • Fall Party –October

  • Winter Party -December

  • Valentine’s Day-February

Parties are planned and organized by parent volunteers.  Northwest Primary has limited the number of parent volunteers to 3 volunteers per party.  Siblings will not be able to attend.

Contact Me:

Feel free to contact me using my school email address:  wade.j@northwest.sparcc.org, the REMIND app or by putting a note in your child’s folder.

Homework:

Typically students will be responsible for:

  1. Reading 15+ minutes each night (reading minutes calendar)

  2. A fluency passage once a week

  3. Occasionally, a math worksheet that aligns with the skills we’re working on.

  4. Any unfinished work in class (due the next day)

*Homework will not begin till the week of August 30th.

Lunch with your child:

Parents are able to come to lunch on their child’s birthday and once during the week their child is “student of the week”.  Please limit lunch visits to special occasions.

Lunch Money/Book Fair Money/Santa’s Workshop Money:

When your child brings money to school for lunch, a book fair or Santa’s workshop please put the money in an envelope or zip lock bag.  Please label it with your child’s full name and the amount of money the bag should contain.

Remind:

Along with a weekly newsletter I use the Remind app to communicate and share photos during the week.  This app can be used on a computer, tablet or smartphone.  To join my class text @33c6ce9 to the number 81010 or follow this link:  https://www.remind.com/join/33c6ce9.   This is one of the fastest ways to communicate with me.

Scholastic Book Orders

Once a month I will be sending home a Scholastic Book order.  Feel free to order using the paper flier or to order online from Scholastics website:  https://orders.scholastic.com/P28G6. Please use the code P28G6 when placing online book orders.

Snack:

We will have a snack time every morning around 10:40 am.  Students are encouraged to bring a small healthy snack from home each day.  A few ideas are:  pretzels, carrot sticks, raisins, apples, fruit snacks, etc.  Please pack the snack separate from their lunch, such as in the front pocket of their book bag.  No drinks other than water are permitted during snack time.  Students may bring a water bottle or use the classroom drinking fountain.

Specials:  Please note our special schedule changes at the beginning of the third grading period.  Don’t forget to wear or bring gym shoes to P.E.

Star Student:

A Star Student will be chosen each week. This student will be chosen based on their character, effort, and behavior in the classroom.

Water Bottles

Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle to school with them daily.  Water bottles with a spill proof lid work out the best.  They should contain only water.
